The eagle spreads its wings
but does not soar.
The swallow lifts its throat
but sings no more.

The meadow ‘neath my window
Fades from sight,
The shadows in my room
Surmount the light.

My body frees the soul
So grudgingly
And sinks into the grave
Eternally.
